Looking back at that art thief incident, I was reminded of the times in which I came across a familiar work in a thief's gallery but had NO idea where the original was.  I was lucky that someone was able to recognize my work and inform me of the theft, but there are so much unreported theft on deviantART and on the Internet as a whole, and its harder to report the theft without links to an original source.  Now, I know I'm not the first to discover this tool (in fact, I'm probably the last and will most likely receive a chorus of "Oh, I already knew that!" responses, but this is too important to ignore), but Google has extra features to its image search engine:  reverse image search.

Basically, you can find most websites featuring the image in question by clicking on camera icon in the query box (images.google.com), copy/paste image URL into the box OR upload the image, and then hit search!  Within the first couple hits should be the original source. :D  This person on tumblr shows that you can even drag the image into the query box, but I haven't figured out how to do that.

Of course, you can use this tool to see on which websites your own work shows up!  And so, I plugged in one of my oft-stolen fanarts Collab: One More Kiss by Kamden to see what new theft I could find.

Yep, I figured as much.  Well, it may be on Photobucket, but I've been able to get Photobucket theft deleted before.  I've talked about how to do that on a much earlier journal, but I'll repost it here (since we're all about taking care of theft).

Directions for sending an email to report Photobucket copyright infringement:

DMCA Notice of Alleged Infringement ("Notice")
1. Identify the copyrighted work that you claim has been infringed, or-if multiple copyrighted works are covered by this Notice-you may provide a representative list of the copyrighted works that you claim have been infringed.

2. Identify the material or link you claim is infringing (or the subject of infringing activity) and that access to which is to be disabled, including at a minimum, if applicable, the URL of the link shown on the Photobucket website where such material may be found.

3. Provide your mailing address, telephone number, and, if available, email address.

4. Include both of the following statements in the body of the Notice:

* "I hereby state that I have a good faith belief that the disputed use of the copyrighted material is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law (e.g., as a fair use)."

* "I hereby state that the information in this Notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that I am the owner, or authorized to act on behalf of the owner, of the copyright or of an exclusive right under the copyright that is allegedly infringed."

5. Provide your full legal name and your electronic or physical signature.

Deliver this Notice, with all items completed, to Photobucket's Designated Copyright Agent:

Happy art theft hunting, everyone!

EDIT:  IMPORTANT NOTE!  When it comes to uncovering "edited" works like the examples displayed here, you may need to go to the last page of queries to see "In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 28 already displayed.
If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included."
Clicking on the hypertext "repeat the search with the omitted results included" will allow possible "edits" to be included in the search.
