EDIT3: My sister made a formal proposal, so give it as much support as you can, so that it can hopefully be recognized by dA administrators: [link]
*nekoni also wrote a very thorough essay on popularity, it's real worth, and the positives and negatives of it. Read that and support it too: [link]

EDIT: This is something that my sister brought up in her journal, so I'm going to post it here as well:
"~bluestiger had prompted me to search "Akatsuki" on dA. What I found was that the first few pages seemed to have been rearranged. It's different than what it used to be. If you search "Akatsuki", you will see that the first few pages are largely dominated by *masamunerevolution's comics and deviations. To investigate further, I looked at the deviations and realized that she had (likely) unintentionally put them in the wrong categories. Each one is in the "Manga/Anime>Traditional Media>Drawings" category, when they should be in the fanart gallery. What does this mean? Apparently, in every search original art categories are given blatant priority over fanart categories. Oh, this is fair exposure indeed."
I bet some of you are wondering why the Popular section, front page included, is all mixed up. Deviations with 60 favorites are in the first pages, and deviations with 400 favorites have been pushed further back. This is all due to deviantART's new policy called "Fair Exposure." So that "anybody" can have a shot at getting on the front page, deviantART now orders the popular deviations by category along with favorites. That is why there was a "Desktop Screenshot" on the front page a few hours ago. This is, quite honestly, Socialism on dA.
Pardon my language, but this is bulls***. True, it's the same 50+ artists that are in the first couple or so pages of the Popular section, but they all work hard to get there. Some of the popular artists use deviantART to get noticed by possible employers, and they put in a lot of effort to get noticed for that reason. They spend hours on their art, and they've been here for a long enough time to get noticed and to get their art out there. Earlier, there was a deviation on the front page that was someone's first deviation.
As I said before, every page of the popular section is formatted to this new policy. Deviations from every category, from Desktops to Scraps, are included systematically. I always enjoy following my deviations as they go from page to page in the day's popular gallery. Under the 120 deviation viewing setting from my subscription, my deviations usually make it to the first page within 24 hours. This helps get my art noticed, and I always feel so proud of myself that I have come this far and have worked this hard. If I ever end up on the front page, I want it to be because I deserved it, not because dA decided that I should be featured "to be fair." I want to get noticed because I was talented and creative enough, not because of luck. I now hope that I never get on the front page, because I know it would be because dA wanted to be "fair" to me, and that I was taking that spot away from someone more talented than myself.
If dA didn't want a "popularity contest" on its site, why did they create a section titled "Popular" in the first place? I am so tired of hearing people starting wars over the front page. Those deviations are in the "Popular" section, ergo, logic tells us that it should be order by popularity, not by category mixed with luck and popularity. It's not fair to the artists who do end up on the front page either. The artist whose Desktop was on the front page was flamed incessantly for it, and I'm sure the same is happening to the other featured artists.
In my opinion, Socialism has no place on dA. What's next? People are bound to still complain about "unfairness" one way or another, so will it be Communism next? Would we only keep 50% of our favorites, comments, and pageviews, and the other 50% of it would be distributed to artists who have yet to be recognized?
Of course, that's an overexaggeration (I hope). I always thought that the "Random Deviant" thing was to help dA members expand their borders and find new artists. Ugh, my day is going downhill fast. On top of being sick and having a big exam today, deviantART just. . . ack. I really need to study. I'm sorry about ranting to you guys about the Fail Exposure, but I really needed to get this off of my chest.

Did you hear that Camden caught on fire? Pretty suspicious that they were planning on rebuilding there.

Instead of being on the fanart>anime/manga section (where there are lots of competition), it was in fanart>skins (no competition).
Since the new system gives more importance to the favs of unknown categories, that miscategorized copy of Ramy's style got there easily.
Quite pathetic, as I think it could be yet another of Ramy's account
But whatever.
I don't like this new system either. It's 'fair' for the little categories, but very unfair to the ones that have the most competition (fanart, anime/manga and digital art).
Now the people that upload in those popular categories won't stand a chance at all.
There you have mediocre literature popping up.
oh well.

~ The two rules of procrastination: 1) Do it today. 2) Tomorrow will be today tomorrow ~
And this is not socialism. Bad mood or not, that's a pretty bad comparison. Socialism is a system of politics and communism is a more specialized form of that. You're comparing giving everyone a fair chance to absolute government.. I don't get it. And so what? What's wrong with socialism, or communism? Why are you assuming that communism automatically entails corrupt leaders who ruin the system? But whatever your views on socialism and communism are, they are irrelevant here, because an art community and website has nothing to do with either type of government.
